Who is a veteran, and what qualifies someone?
In plain terms, a veteran is someone who served in the active military, naval, or air service and was not discharged dishonorably. But the details matter - especially for National Guard and Reserve members - so here is what actually counts.
What is honorable service, and why does character of discharge matter?
When someone leaves the military they receive a "character of discharge." It appears on the DD-214 and it strongly affects which VA benefits are available. But a less-than-perfect discharge does not always mean the door is closed.
What is service connection?
Service connection is the VA officially deciding that a disability or illness was caused by - or made worse by - military service. It is the key that unlocks disability compensation and many other benefits.
