What the veteran must meet

  • The veteran needs a single or combined service-connected rating of 70 percent or higher.
  • The veteran must also need in-person personal care - hands-on help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, or eating, or supervision and protection because of a cognitive or mental-health condition - for at least six continuous months.

What the primary caregiver receives

  • A monthly stipend paid directly to the caregiver, set by the local wage rate and the level of care. It is not counted as taxable income.
  • CHAMPVA health coverage if the caregiver has no other insurance, plus mental-health services, caregiver training, and travel support for caregiving.
  • Up to 30 days a year of respite care so the caregiver can rest.

How the application works

  • The veteran and caregiver apply together on VA Form 10-10CG. A VA team then assesses the veteran's needs and the care you provide to set the level, which sets the stipend.
  • One secondary caregiver can also be approved to serve as a backup when the primary caregiver is unavailable.
