VA Dental Care
Many veterans assume dental care comes with VA health care - it usually does not. Free VA dental is reserved for specific groups defined by law, but there is also a low-cost private dental insurance program (VADIP) open to nearly every enrolled veteran and to CHAMPVA family members.
Who this is for
Most veterans are stunned to learn VA health care usually does not include the dentist. But if you are rated 100%, were a POW, or are in VR&E, full dental care is yours - and if not, there is a low-cost insurance plan almost every enrolled veteran can buy. The mistake is assuming you have no options.

Key facts & current figures
- Being enrolled in VA health care does not automatically include dental care - free VA dental is limited to specific eligibility classes written into the law (38 CFR 17.161).
- You qualify for free, comprehensive VA dental care if you are rated 100% service-connected (permanent schedular or TDIU), have a service-connected compensable dental condition, are a former prisoner of war, or are in a Chapter 31 VR&E program.
- A note on temporary 100% ratings: a temporary total rating does not open Class IV dental eligibility - it has to be a schedular 100% or TDIU.
- Recently separated Gulf War-era and later veterans can get a one-time course of dental care if they apply within 180 days of discharge and did not get a full dental exam at separation (Class II).
- Everyone else - most enrolled veterans - can buy discounted private dental insurance through VADIP (Delta Dental or MetLife), and CHAMPVA family members may enroll too.

Who gets free VA dental care
- Class I - a service-connected, compensable dental condition: full care for that condition.
- Class IV - rated 100% service-connected (permanent schedular) or paid at the 100% rate for individual unemployability (TDIU): comprehensive dental care. A *temporary* 100% rating does not count.
- Class IIC - former prisoners of war: any needed dental care.
- Class V - enrolled in Chapter 31 Veteran Readiness & Employment: dental care needed to reach your rehab goal.
Time-limited and situational classes
- Class II - if you served at least 90 days and did not get a full dental exam before separation, you may get a one-time course of care by applying within 180 days of discharge.
- Class IIA - a service-connected noncompensable dental condition from combat wounds or service trauma.
- Class IIB - homeless veterans in a qualifying VA program can get a one-time course of dental care.
- Class III / VI - when a dental problem is aggravating a service-connected condition under treatment, or complicating inpatient care you are receiving.
VADIP - low-cost insurance for everyone else
- The VA Dental Insurance Program lets any enrolled veteran, and CHAMPVA family members, buy discounted dental coverage from Delta Dental or MetLife.
- Plans typically cover exams, cleanings, fillings, crowns, dentures, and emergency care; premiums and copays depend on the plan you pick.
- Signing up for VADIP does not affect your eligibility for free VA dental care if you also qualify for a class above.

To be considered for free VA dental care, apply through your VA medical center or online, or call the VA Health Benefits Hotline at 877-222-8387 to check which class you fall under. For VADIP insurance, you enroll directly with the carrier (Delta Dental at 855-460-3302, or MetLife) - not through a VA form - and you must already be enrolled in VA health care or be a CHAMPVA beneficiary. There is no open season; you can sign up any time.
